Getting To and Around Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe transportation options are plentiful, and that’s a good thing since this area is the stage for roughly 15 towns. Split down the middle and separating Nevada and California, the Lake Tahoe area takes up a lot of land and encompasses many miles. With so many wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities interwoven between the communities, it is important to have a way to negotiate Lake Tahoe travel with ease. Although things become much easier if you have your own transportation, there are other alternatives. Here's a gathering of Lake Tahoe's travel options.Getting to the Lake Tahoe ski resorts is easier than you think. From the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, it’s approximately an hour’s drive to most area ski resorts on all season highways. Three major ways – Interstate 80 and U.S. Highways 50 and 395 – access the Lake Tahoe region. These all-weather freeways branch out to reach resorts and lodging properties throughout Reno, North Lake Tahoe, and South Lake Tahoe, so it’s easy to get from one destination to another.

From San Francisco:

Approximate drive time 3 hours. Take I-80E. Keep left and merge onto I-580 W/I-80 E. Keep left to continue on I-80 E. Keep right at the fork to stay on I-80 E, follow signs for Reno. Take exit 185 for CA-89 S toward Lake Tahoe. Depending on your location of the rental,at the traffic circle, take the 1st exit onto CA-89 S. 

From Sacramento:

Approximate Drive Time 1.5 hours. Continue to CA-160 N. Follow I-80 E to CA-89 S in Truckee. Take exit 185 from I-80 E for CA-89 S toward Lake Tahoe. At the traffic circle, take the 1st exit onto CA-89 S. 

From South Lake Tahoe:

Approximate Drive Time 15 - 30 minutes. Head south on Lake Tahoe Blvd toward Los Angeles Ave. Turn right onto CA-89 N/Emerald Bay Rd. Use any lane to turn left onto CA-28 W/CA-89 N

From Reno:

Approximate Drive Time 1.5 - 1.75 Hours. Get on I-580 N. Use the 2nd from the left lane to take the ramp to I-580 N. Keep right at the fork and merge onto I-580 N. Use the right 2 lanes to take exit 68B forInterstate 80 W toward Reno/Sacramento. Merge onto I-80 W. Take exit 185 toward Lake Tahoe/CA-89 S. At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit onto CA-89 S. At the next traffic circle, take the 1st exit and stay on CA-89 S
